Cleaning and scrubbing will wait ’till tomorrow, but children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs! Dust go to sleep! I’m rocking my baby. Babies don’t keep. – Ruth Hamilton

Can't WAIT for Them to REALLY Help

Avery is always mimicking me in everything I do-it's really fun to watch. Lately she has been "walking" her babies just like we do with Mack. Today she was determined to put shoes (Mack's shoes) on her baby. She even propped her baby in the jumper so she could get underneath to get the shoes on.

I used to be able to get my cleaning done in the morning while they played...not anymore. Every time I try to swift Avery takes that away and now when I get the vacuum or the hand vacuum out Mack takes that. I have been all about getting them involved-Avery feeds Cooper and wipes down her high chair every night with a wipe. In fact, I have been excited to start a helper chart. She LOVES to clean up her toys as well-okay that might be a little extream. We actually make her pick them up! It's either that or time out (I will write about that later). It's funny to see them do this, but I am such a clean freak and clean everyday, so it will be a lot better when they can really help! me

I didn't catch him, but this was righ afterwards...it's running

She takes the cloth part off and throws it away

More Lazy Mornings

Avery likes to cheers every body with her milk

One of the great things about the weekends...Daddy is home! We were all hanging out and Mark got to enjoy some time with the kids (like I do every morning).
We are very lucky! I love my family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happier Days

My last post was pretty heavy and I felt weird about putting so much emotion out there, but it is nice to write it all out and express what has been bottled up. Since my mom left we have been taking it easy. Miss Mallory came over on Wednesday so I could work upstairs and organizes the mass of clothes my children have consumed. I was not ready to leave Avery at that time, but on Thursday I did leave the house to run a few errands and it was a mess. It was like I was forcing myself to be away for a little while-the whole time I was crying and had so much fear that something would happen. I came home as soon as I realized it was silly to be away! Today (Friday) I took Avery to the library and we met up with cousin Cohan and Aunt Heidi as well as other friends. I was so happy to see her light up when we were there. She was happy and dancing around! She really wanted to give love to Cohan, but he wasn't having it-that didn't stop her. It felt good! When we came home we changed and went to meet up with the twins and their mom to swim at their pool. It was hot, but their pool is perfect for young kids. Again, Avery was having a blast and Mack is hilarious in the water-no fear! He puts his face in and kicks his legs-swimming lessons are helping. When we got home it was time for lunch so instead of changing I pulled out our new picnic blanket and filled our tray full of food and we had an indoor picnic. It was a mess, but funny to see them sit there and eat their food.

We will continue to watch Avery and Mack and hope we never have to have a bad week again! Glad it's the weekend and we can have more time together.

Febrile Seizure

Last Sunday was the WORST day Mark and I have ever had to experience...
When Avery was born it was not an easy delivery. In fact had it been 20 years ago we would have both died. She was ripped out in about 20 minutes because her heart rate dropped down to 7-nurses were on top of me and everyone was yelling. Due to everything that happened she suffered a shoulder injury and had to spend 3 days in the ICU. She was not able to breath oxygen on her own (she was also 3 weeks early). We were new parents and had no idea what had happened. I remember waking up at 3:00 in the morning and hadn't seen my baby! We had to sign our names to see our own little girl. This was by far a horrible time in our life, but last Sunday topped it! I think when we were in the hospital (I had drugs) and we didn't know any different. Today is Wednesday and it is still hard for me to talk about it without tears, but I think writing it out might help.
I had just finished my post about our mini vacation when Avery woke up early from her nap. We brought her down to our bed and let her watch T.V. while she enjoyed some Pedilyte. We noticed she had a temp before the nap, but assumed it was from the heat. At this point her temp was about 102.8-Avery runs low (like 96) so this was really high. I texted our wonderful nurse Kari and she said I should give her Ibuprofen. I only had Tylenol-not sure why I didn't just give her that! I called my mom because I thought maybe it was still from the heat.
Then she was acting fine. She was rolling around in the living room playing and laughing. I decided to run to the store, but when I left Avery was begging to go with me. I figured it wouldn't hurt to run to the store. As I was putting her into the car she was talking and excited to go for a ride. I ran inside real quick (leaving the car on with air) to tell Mark that he and Mack should just come with us and maybe we could run by his parents house and pick up dinner. As I came out Avery was staring at me. I then realized she wasn't changing her expression. I went into panic mode and grabbed her up to run to Mark. He knew immediately that it wasn't like any scream he had ever heard. He pick her up and she was completely non-responsive-I truly thought my baby was dead! As a parent you immediately think the worst. I dialed 911 and handed the phone to Mark-I was not able to talk-I was hyperventilating and hysterical! She was just laying in the middle of our living room not moving, but had a pulse. She then came out of it and was staring at Mack-who was trying to rub her little hand.
I went outside to look for the ambulance because we live in the country. As I was pacing the driveway with Mack in my arms I started calling family. I couldn't get a hold of anybody in Mark's family and I had his phone so it was hard to get all of them. I called my dad and all I could say was Avery is not responding and ambulance is on the way! He (with fear in his voice) said we will be there! Mark finally got a hold of his dad and they were here by the time we left the driveway! Hiram actually parked in the middle of our yard!
The firetrucks, Ambulances, and volunteer workers all showed up! By this time she had come out of what we now know was a Febrile Seizure. She vomited all over the place and we asked them to take her to the hospital. At the hospital they ran test to see if she had strep or an urinary track infection. Everything came back negative and we were headed back home. My parents and Hiram were all at the hospital and Jane was taking care of Mack. Mark's family all came up right as we were leaving-I realized then how scared I was-when I had to talk about it to other people.
We are on our first day with no fever, but I wanted to include some facts about Febrile Seizures. They do run in families, so Mack is at a higher risk. Here is some information:
* Febrile seizures are convulsions brought on by a fever in infants or small children.
* During a febrile seizure, a child often loses consciousness and shakes, moving limbs on both sides of the body. Less commonly, the child becomes rigid or has twitches in only a portion of the body, such as an arm or a leg, or on the right or the left side only.
*Most febrile seizures last a minute or two, although some can be as brief as a few seconds while others last for more than 15 minutes.

* The majority of children with febrile seizures have rectal temperatures greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
* Most febrile seizures occur during the first day of a child's fever.

* Approximately one in every 25 children will have at least one febrile seizure, and more than one-third of these children will have additional febrile seizures before they outgrow the tendency to have them.
* Febrile seizures usually occur in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years and are particularly common in toddlers.
* Children rarely develop their first febrile seizure before the age of 6 months or after 3 years of age. The older a child is when the first febrile seizure occurs, the less likely that child is to have more.

* A few factors appear to boost a child's risk of having recurrent febrile seizures, including young age (less than 15 months) during the first seizure, frequent fevers, and having immediate family members with a history of febrile seizures.
I got this information from:
I will always remember the day she was born and I will NEVER forget the way she looked when I got her out of the car or the feeling of fear that my baby girl wasn't going to make it. It even crossed my mind that she was going to have brain damage after it happened. Now I am hearing from a lot of people that this is very common and leaves me feeling better about her future.
Mark and I repeat this frequently: God will only give you what you can handle-we have been tested!
Through this all, family and friends have been wonderful! We want to thank Heidi (and Scott and Cohan) for all the food and our parents for giving our kids everything. We have a well stocked fridge! Avery has been very spoiled this week and she deserves it. She can eat whatever she wants and has received multiple gifts from both grandmothers. Mack benefits from it as well!

She Loves ELMO-I think they put a drug in him to make kids love him:)
Thank God everything has been okay!

Our First Family "Mini" Vacation

If you have been reading our blog you know that we took an amazing trip to Italy! This weekend we had the opportunity to take our two kiddos to St. Louis for our own mini vacation. My family was down at the lake, so we had their place all to ourselves. We left Saturday morning after taking it easy and just hanging out. Below is Avery mimicking her daddy before we left:

She makes us laugh everyday

After some sort of nap/rest time we headed to the Cardinal game

Here they are in the Cardinal store waiting...

Mack was just hanging on during the game due to lack of sleep

Avery LOVED it! She was jumping up and down

Here are the friends we brought. Brian is a friend of Mark's from high school and his girlfriend Meagan was wonderful! We had fun and they helped us so much (luckily she is a pediatrician and loves kids). Avery doesn't go to too many people, but Meagan was her favorite that night.

Mark was having fun...wish I could have joined him with the beer!:)

This is one of my favorite times-in the morning!
When the kids woke up (we woke them up at 9:00) we fed them and got them ready for the St. Louis zoo. We were very excited because the zoo is so much fun-especially with kids. My parents are Friends of the Zoo, so we get to go into everything for free (which is nice with kids when you don't know how long they will last). Of course there was a heat advisory today...

Mack is brainstorming how to get the hat off!

They really thought the elephants were interesting. I don't have pictures, but the penguin house was also a hit and is the BEST place to be when the temps are high. Mack was so mad (and loud) because he wanted to get the penguins and probably eat them :) we had to leave!

This is them looking at the elephants

A really neat area was the kids zoo!

You can pet the animals! Or if your Mack pull the ears off! Again we had to leave the poor animals after that.

They also have these cool fountains. Avery refused, but Mack thought it was so fun. He was laughing loud and walking all over the place!

Here we are at the end...not a dry part on our bodies. We found an air conditioned area to eat lunch and then got them ready to head home.

Even though we only went to St. Louis (an hour and a half away) it was fun to enjoy our first mini vacation with just the four of us. Can't wait to explore more this year as they get older and when it's not so hot outside!

Love and Marriage-Plus Kids

When you first get married life is carefree and you and your partner can go and do whatever you want. Then you are so excited to add little additions into your life and man are they the MOST precious/fun/amazing additions in the world. They also bring you and you partner closer together.
I will never forget watching an Oprah episode discussing the difference between loving your children and being in love with your husband. Now that we have kids it really makes more sense to me. If you are a parent you know what I am talking about! How hard is it to get consumed with your child and get into a routine? When you have two children it is even harder because you have one for each person (not to mention having more). It's easy to say you will take time for each other and get a babysitter or use family members. We have both of these, but a babysitter is so expensive and we never want to take advantage of family members-plus we love being with our kids.
Since we have been back from Italy life has been crazy. Mark has been working late and we have been on the go. This weekend since we had nothing planned we had thought about having a date night, but instead (to make it more affordable) we put the kids down and helped ourselves to ice cream (and maybe some popcorn) and put a movie in and snuggled on the couch. I don't have many pictures and Mark will probably not be happy with the two I am including (hahaha). I wanted to enjoy the night! I know it may seem silly to some people, but it meant a lot to us and made me remember I am in love with my husband! Today we are attempting the Cardinal's game and then the zoo tomorrow where I will be reminded (just like every second) that I love my children...there are many different kinds of love!

Serving up two different kinds of ice cream!
Have great weekend!

Lazy Summer Mornings

Every morning these two sit on the couch with their drinks and I sit in between them with my coffee. It's so cute!
